Dermal Fillers For Scars

Scars may form on the face for a variety of reasons, including acne, trauma, prior surgery, or illness. There are certain types of scars to which dermal fillers are more effective. Scars that are depressed or uneven or cause indentation of the skin may have a dramatic improvement with use of fillers. The filler is injected underneath the scar causing it to elevate. This allows the scar to sit more evenly with the surrounding skin resulting in a more natural appearance.

Dermal Fillers

Although the fillers are temporary (typically lasting months to years) some permanent results can be achieved. Sometimes the scar will stay elevated even when the dermal filler dissolves. Dermal fillers may also be used as an adjunct to other more permanent scar treatments including subcision and laser.

The use of temporary dermal fillers is very safe. A local anesthetic is typically applied to the skin prior to injection in order to make it more comfortable. Most people only experience mild redness, swelling, and bruising that lasts a few days. Applying ice for the first day or two can decrease these side effects.
